Screens, Genuine, OEM, After Market iPhone screen difference

Recently, I started to selling screens on TradeMe, as usual, I am honest with what I am selling.

The screen I am selling are aftermarket, they are cheap, brand new, good quality, cheery picked from factory.

Wait a minute, you may ask, why would aftermarket screens good quality? They are cheap rubbish, aren’t they? Or Are they?

It makes me have a feeling to talk through different kinds of screens on the market to give you an idea.

Brand New Genuine Apple Screens

This simply does not exist on the market, just forget about these. Apple’s supplier won’t sell you parts, simple as that.

Genuine Apple Screens, pulled from iPhones

These are the very very rare, they are usually pulled from iCloud locked iPhones or water damaged ones. Quality is very good (if they are not damaged)

Genuine Apple Screens, Smashed, then put on New Glass (re-glassed)

These are the most common genuine screens on the market, the quality of them really varies, it really depends on what it went through, how the repair was done.

In short, if the screen was slightly damaged, and repaired “professionally”, then it is the best.

If it was badly smashed, and repaired “professionally”, then it is good.

If it is not repaired “professionally”, then it is bad.

But how do you know if it is repaired professionally? You will need proper equipments to repair these, big ones, expensive ones, and factory environment. Not small lab, small machines, now you get the idea?

Fake Genuine Apple Screens

says it all, avoid these.

Aftermarket Screens

Now, here is the interesting part, not all aftermarket screens were created equally.

There are many factories in China making iPhone screens, as a result, quality varies alot.

The funny thing is, when people buying aftermarket screens, they assumed they are all the same, fair enough, they are all called “aftermarket” , and they don’t have  brand names.  So the cheaper the better? Or the dearer the better?

You simply don’t know unless you know exactly where the screens were made and have some inside knowledge of this.

You can buy these from AliExpress, eBay or whereever you want, then you will look for the cheap ones, then, you will find out, the screens you bought are problematic, they have a very high failure rate, their colour is very different than your original Apple screen, they don’t even respond to your touch, some times, they simply don’t work.

Yes, all above is normal, that’s what I experienced, until I have found someone to individually test screens right in one of the best aftermarket factories.

Not all screens from same factories were made the same, as you can imagine. That’s why cheery pick them are very important.

In short, as long as you can cherry pick screens before you buy, you are good, these screens perform the same as original one, if not better. As Original screens were not made the same neither.

Now you can see why people think genuine screens are better, it is only because it has some baseline reference, they passed first round Apple QA after all. However, as they suffered impact / liquid damage, they are not the same as brand new ones. That is why I sell brand new aftermarket screens, because there is a team in China to cherry pick for me, and the screens are cheap, of course.

Special note on 3D touch screens

As today (23/12/2016) , there is no aftermarket 3D touch enabled screens.

This means iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, 7, 7 Plus screens are all genuine on the market, the difference is how well the repaire was done.

Also need to note , there are aftermarket 6s and 6s plus screens, made from iphone 6 / 6 plus screens, changed flex cable, as a result, they will fit on to the 6s generation but won’t have any 3D touch features, it is very easy to test, just try 3D touch after you get your screen repaired, say press an app icon on home screen.

Note 2:

there are aftermarket iphone 6s and iphone 6s plus ,iphone 7 , iphone 7 plus screens.
